A Stolen Life

Jaycee Dugard was only 11 years old when she was abducted, forced into a gray sedan within sight of her home in peaceful South Lake Tahoe, California. The date was June 10, 1991, and she was held captive by her kidnappers—Phillip Craig Garrido and his wife, Nancy—in their home for the next 18 years. Every parent’s nightmare, what she endured is unimaginable, but how she survived is equally astonishing.

A Stolen Life, written by the now 30-year-old Jaycee, is a gripping memoir that covers her abduction, her captivity and her incredible rescue on August 26, 2009. In her stark, compelling narrative, Jaycee opens up about what she experienced, including how she feels now, a year after being found. She leaves nothing out.

I live a few miles away from where Jaycee was abducted. So, this has always hit close to home for me. My son was her age when she was taken, I thought about her everyday for years! You have to read Jaycee's story to get it.She is an inspiration to every woman. And if you have ever suffered any kind of abuse you will see a bit of yourself in Jaycee. What a smart, positive, beautiful woman she turned out to be. Despite the sickness that became her life for so long.

It amazes me how despite all that she endured, Jaycee came out as level headed as she is. I cried while reading this book. I can't even imagine

This was just as hard to read because of the detailed accounts of the abuse, as well as because of the skipping around. It helped to understand her POV and frame of mind at the time, in terms of why she did not try to escape. The isolation was likely a major factor in her coming to see her abusers as her family. I read through it in a day. Its like a car wreck...you can not look away.

good read

I knew nothing about the story of Jaycee when I purchased this book, but was interested in a girl who was kidnapped for 18 years. It is written from her perspective and not knowing much background, I found it confusing at times as she writes the main events of what she remembers without too many details. I felt like she was still much younger than she really was when she wrote this book, but I wanted to keep reading it nevertheless, if only out of curiosity. It's worth the read, but I'm not sure it was worth the money.
