Abraham Lincoln’s presidency is the hinge on which American history pivots. His story has been told many times, but never by a man who himself sought the office of president and contemplated its awesome responsibilities.
In Abraham Lincoln, George S. McGovern—a Midwesterner, former U.S. senator, presidential candidate, veteran and historian—offers his unique insight into our sixteenth president. He shows how Lincoln sometimes went astray, particularly in his restrictions on civil liberties, but also how he adjusted his sights and transformed the Civil War from a political dispute to a moral crusade. McGovern reminds us why we hold Lincoln in such esteem and why he remains the standard by which all of his successors are measured.

McGovern did a balanced job at covering the most well known facets of A. Lincoln. A great deal of the book focuses on the Civil War and his relationships with his generals as well as his re-election bid in 1864. Any new insight on Lincoln won't be found in these pages but this is a good, brief account of why Lincoln is considered great. Recommended for those who are beginning to learn more about him.

Sen. McGovern has hit the high points of Abraham Lincoln's life. The points he hit were interesting and covered items that are only recently coming out. The Lincoln myth is being torn down. McGovern writes about Lincoln's true feelings about African-Americans which is contrary to what most Americans think. McGovern covers his depression, his religious ideas, and his ambition. It is a great introduction into the study of Lincoln and is highly recommended for that.
